If you’ve accidentally deleted the Recycle Bin icon from your Desktop or some programs have removed it, you can restore the recycle bin icon by following the simple steps below:
On a Windows 7 PC
Step 1: Go to Start >> Control Panel >> “Personalization”
Step 2: Click “Change Desktop Icons”
Step 3: Tick the “Recycle Bin”
You can see that there are few other options given here as well, such as “Computer, User’s Files, Network, Control Panel” icons. You can remove and enable these icons by selecting from here.
On a Windows XP PC
To restore Recycle bin icon for Windows XP PC, you need to edit Windows Registry. Please note that Registry is one of the core database that store configurations and settings in Windows. Please be extra careful when you make changes to Windows registry.
To access Registry, click on Start >> Run >> “regedit”. Now create a backup of registry:
Step 1: Select HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Step 2: Click File >> Export
Step 3: Give a name and store it on Desktop
Note: We create a backup of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE only because we are going to edit only this portion.
To restore Recycle Bin in XP
Step 1: Expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and locate “\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace”
Step 2: Right click “NameSpace” and click “New” >> Click “Key”
Step 3: Enter {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E} and press Enter
Step 4: Click on {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}, on the right panel double click on “Default”, enter “Recycle Bin” in the window opened
Step 5: Click Ok and close Registry Editor
