There may be times when you need to use POP3 for email accounts in Microsoft Exchange 2010. By default, POP3 service isn’t installed in Exchange 2010. To use POP3 email for an Exchange 2010 account, we must first ensure the POP3 service is started. This article explains everything you need to know about configuring POP3 email accounts with Exchange 2010.
Starting POP3 Service in Exchange 2010
You can start POP3 service in Microsoft Exchange 2010 by following the steps below. Before proceeding, ensure that you have the right permission (Organization Management Permission or View-Only Organization Management Permission) to do this operation:
By using Microsoft Management Console to enable POP3:
Step 1: Run services.msc and look for Microsoft Exchange POP3 and Click Properties
Step 2: Set Automatic as Startup Type and then click Apply
Step 3: Under Service status, click Start and click OK.
By using PowerShell to enable POP3:
Step 1: Run Command Prompt (cmd) and run the following command to set the POP3 service to start automatically.
| Set-service msExchangePOP3 -startuptype automatic |
Step 2: Run the following command to start the service.
| Start-service -service msExchangePOP3 |
Once the above steps are done, you are ready to configure POP3 account to your email client. In this article, we will see how to configure POP3 account for Exchange emails in Microsoft Outlook 2010.
Configuring POP3 email account in Microsoft Outlook 2010
Setp 1: In Microsoft Outlook, click File >> Account Settings >> Account Settings.
Step 2: Under Email tab, click New (Assuming that you already have an email profile configured and Outlook is running. If you don’t learn how to create an email profile here.)
Step 3: Select Email Account >> Click Next >> Select “Manually configure settings or additional server types” and click Next. Select Internet E-mail in next window and click Next.
Step 4: Enter the User Information and Server Information as shown below. Ensure you choose the Account Type as POP3. Then click on “More Settings“.
Step 5: Under Outgoing Server tab, tick “My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication” and select “Use same settings as my incoming mail server“.
(Assuming that you have not changed the SMTP Relay section. If you have changed the SMTP Relay section, enter the username and password by selecting “Log on using”
Step 6: Click on Advaced tab >> enter Server Port Numbers:
For Incoming server (POP3): 110
For Ougoing server (SMTP): 25
Then under Deliver, tick “Leave a copy of messages on the server“. You can specify how long you would like the server to keep the copy.
Step 7: Click OK
Step 8: Now we are ready to test the account. Click on Test Account Settings. Ensure there are no errors.
Step 9: Click Finish.
